Last night saw the gathering of the Nepean Philanthropists at the magnificent Lewers Gallery. Whilst the weather had threatened to impose on us all day, the evening turned out to be warm and inviting, mostly because of the company in the room.

This year the Foundation has given grants of over $95,000 toward medical research at the Sydney Medical School – Nepean, and the guests were treated to presentations from some of the researchers on the work they are doing and the hopes they have for their work.

One particularly passionate speech by A/Prof Martin Krause was followed by a speech by one of his patients Martha, who suffers from a rare form of Dystonic cerebral palsy which gives this clearly intelligent woman uncontrollable movements that affect her daily life. There was not a dry eye in the house after her talk, and it put a face to the important research that A/Prof Krause is looking to undertake. At the other end of the spectrum we saw how an innovative medical student, Mr Nicholas Spooner, is using the virtual world of Second Life to design a training program for young doctors, being able to present them with scenarios they may never see in a real training hospital.

The night was a great another success for the Foundation, proving that despite the global economic crisis, the people of the Nepean community still have huge hearts and are prepared to support our local charities as much as they can.

We would like to thank the Lewers Gallery, Ross Dobson for providing a fabulous menu and to all that made the evening a success.

SINCE its humble beginning s in 2000, the Nepean Medical Research Foundation (NMRF) has been a driving force in the field of local research.

Founded by Sub Dean, Professor Sirus Narqui, the Foundation and the Nepean Clinical School work towards finding answers, bearing in mind that ‘today’s research is tomorrow’s treatment’.

The continued success of the Foundation was exemplified recently when the NMRF announced its research grants at Nepean Hospital’s annual Scientific Day.

With an impressive total of $95,000 in grants and prizes, seven outstanding research grants were announced, with the money going towards research in the areas of Ectopic Pregnancy, the functional state of cells in normal pregnancy compared to pre-eclampsa, Parkinson’s Disease and measurement of surgical motor skills.

NMRF President, Gwen McMaster-Fay, said she was thrilled to be able to announce the grants, which would contribute significantly to medical research in the local area.

“In these tough economic times, it is a pleasure to give grants to the value of $95,000 to stimulate and reward many of the researchers that are based at the Nepean Clinical School,” Ms McMaster-Fay said.

“We look forward to giving these awards out annually and it is a thrill to see the results of the research.”

The NMRF is proudly supported by the University of Sydney and assists quality research projects at the Nepean Clinical School to contribute to a better understanding of causes and improved treatment of disease.

The NMRF believe there is a continuing need to support community understanding and appreciation of the benefits of a strong and robust research sector in Australia and multi site networks throughout the world.

The Nepean Philanthropists continue to grow in numbers and these generous local donors who have made a commitment to the Foundation for five years will soon attend an annual thank you function at the Lewer’s Gallery to recognise their contribution to local medical research.

Nepean Medical Research Foundation has great honour in announcing

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO
Governor of NSW
as Patron to the Foundation

It is with great pride and immense pleasure stated the President, Gwen McMaster-Fay when she met with Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of NSW, (Chancellor of University of Sydney) that she accepted with pleasure to become Patron of Nepean Medical Research Foundation. She has accepted as Governor, as in her words, when her term expires, the next Governor would continue as Patron. This is a very real honour for our Foundation and our local area.

The Annual Philanthropist Dinner was held at the Great Hall, University of Sydney on Saturday, 25th October.  We were honoured to have in attendance Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC CVO, Governor of NSW to be welcomed as our Patron.  Her Excellency and the Vice Chancellor of University of Sydney, Dr Michael Spence both were guest speakers together with Professor Ralph Nanan newly appointed Sub Dean of Research, Nepean Clinical School.  University of Sydney was well represented on the evening with the Director of Research, Faculty of Medicine, Professor David Burke;Professor of Medicine, Central Clinical School, Professor Richmond Jeremy; and Associate Dean and Head of Nepean Clinical School, Professor Michael Peek.

Guests were entertained throughout the evening by the Penrith Symphony Quartet and Dominique Anderson on the Stuart Grand Piano and the tenor Nicholas Gentile both from the Dame Joan Conservatorium, Penrith demonstrated the young talent of our local area.  It was delightful to foster the youth of our area, all many talented and gifted people academically and artistically.

Five new Nepean Philanthropists were introduced at the dinner and the importance of their contribution was expressed by all in attendance.

A painting donated to Nepean Medical Research Foundation by artist Mr David Calrow was gifted to the Governor as Patron of the Nepean Medical Research Foundation.  The painting of the NSW emblem of the Waratah delighted Her Excellency who plans to hang it in the Government House, Sydney.

We are fortunate also to have the incumbent Mayor of Penrith as our local Patron.  For 2008 – 2009 we are pleased to welcome Councillor Jim Aitken OAM, as Mayor of Penrith.  Both the Penrith City Council and Jim Aitken are Nepean Philanthropists in their own right and Nepean Medical Research Foundation appreciate their support.

All those in attendance voiced their appreciation of a wonderful evening at the Great Hall, University of Sydney.
