WISH LIST
The following wish list is provided by the Clinical School in January 2008. Individual items could potentially be used across all disciplines between clinical and biomedical research. The items are listed by cost. The most urgent equipment needed is the Milipore system (generously donated by a Nepean Philanthropist June 2008).
1. Clinical Research Centre $500,000
Centre to be used by the Universities’ Researchers to conduct clinical research. Funding would be used to establish and nurture the centre for a period of 5 years, including administration, lease and basic equipment. All academic disciplines associated with the University including Surgery and Psychiatry would greatly benefit and have access to this centre. Nepean is a green field for possible future clinical research. The hospital is lacking facilities to properly undertake clinical research (eg adequate space to examine and carry out patient recruitment).
2. Eight colour Flow Cytometer $200,000
This is an important piece of biomedical equipment, which can be used by most groups performing lab-based research. This piece of equipment allows characterisation of up to eight different markers on the surface of a single cell. It is used in Haematology, Immunology, Stem Cell research, etc.
3. Ultrasound Machine $180,000
This piece of Equipment would be solely designated for Clinical research. It can be used by a broad variety of Disciplines including Neurology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cardiology, and Critical Care.
4. Confocal Microscope $150,000
Confocal microscopy is an optical imaging technique used to increase micrograph contrast and/or to reconstruct three-dimensional images. This technique has been gaining popularity in many areas of research. It can be useful to a broad range of biomedical researchers, including Haematology, Immunology, and Pathology.
5. Milipore Water Filter System (Donated June 2008) $25,000
This is a piece of equipment, which is absolutely essential to continue biomedical lab based research at Nepean. It will help all groups involved in laboratory research.
Are you a Nepean Philanthropist?
Having been a member of the Nepean Medical Research Foundation’s board since its inception in 2001, I have experienced first hand that raising money for a good cause was become increasingly difficult in recent years. Whilst competition from many other worthwhile charities contributed to this I believed that many people had become somewhat jaded about attending numerous charity golf days, dinners auctions, trivia nights and art shows etc. In 2006 I decided that there had to be an easier way to raise money for a good local cause particularly as I felt that many people in our area would be prepared to give without the thought of individual gratification in return, as long as they believed that the cause to which they gave to and the money given would be spent appropriately with tangible results.
To raise money for the Foundation I'm decided to aim high - to approach those people in Penrith who have been really successful in our city. That is those that have done well out of Penrith and ask them to commit to giving either personally or through their business a fixed tax deductible amount per year for five years. There was no ball or dinner tables to be bought, no auction items to bid for, no raffle tickets to be purchased - just an opportunity to be part of a significant group of people in Penrith who believed in celebrating the success that Penrith had given to them by making a commitment to give to a very important local organisation whose work would be of great benefit to others in the local community including those who are close to us.
My aim in establishing the Nepean Philanthropists was to get 50 people to each commit to contributing $2,500 per annum for five years and in doing so raise more than $600,000 for the researchers at the Nepean Clinical School over that time. Through the generosity of many great locals this has been achieved. Our aim this financial year is to find 25 more generous locals to join us as Nepean Philanthropists so that recurrent funding remains in place for medical research in our local area for many years to come. Let me know if we can count you in!
